It’s good to be able to read three good books in a row. God has been kindest, I know.

One: Spring Moon by Bette Bao Lord, Epic Saga, 458 pages

Spanning five generations, Bette Bao Lord’s story of the rise-and-fall of an illustrious Chinese clan in China from the 1890s to the 1980s deserves the greatest applause. Never has any saga I have read before been this remarkable—the language flows smoothly, the characters are remarkable, the scenery is alive, and the events are so vivid you could swear you’re there while mute handmaiden dummy recalls her horrors, or while heartless revolutionary Lustrous Jade forgets her son for her near-worthless cause. All the scenes are memorable—I can tell you dozens, but we would exhaust this page.

The only contentions I have with the book are sins of incest. It iss very very subtle, however, and a reader not mature enough wouldn’t detect it because Lord’s great with choosing the right words. She hides the act very carefully (the word ‘incest’ does not occur anywhere in the book, and the whole act took only two lines of print). Lord deserves accolades.

If you’re looking for new stories, if you want to read quotes full of wisdom, if you want to learn a hundred years of Chinese history, or if you just want a good read, this book is for you.

Ten over ten. A must read.

da vinci hoax

Two: The Da Vinci Hoax by Carl E. Olson and Sandra Miesel, Nonfiction,298 pages plus bibliography and index

This is one of the greatest nonfiction books I have read so far. Granted, reading this would make your head spin (the terms and the subject matter are a tad too technical), but the scholarly work that Olson and Miesel has put into this book is remarkable (proof: every page has at least one footnote). Their research is great, and the subjects deep, but the writers had the sense to induce humor into their writing to help us readers understand the subject matter.

The Da Vinci Hoax was written as a book debunking not just Dan Brown’s (in)famous 2003 novel The Da Vinci Code, but also other books that try to discredit Christianity and the divinity of Jesus Christ, like The Templar Revelation, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, or the Woman with the Alabaster Jar.

The book is divided into chapters that focus on the different aspects of well-known heresies—subjects like Mary Magdalene’s supposed marriage to Jesus, Constantine’s supposed rewriting of the Gospels, and gnosticism and the hidden ‘gospels’.

If you just read the Da Vinci Code and you need the truth, if you want to laugh and be awed at the same time, or if you want a great nonfiction read, this book is most suitable.

Ten over ten.

Bonus: you’ll also learn the real reason why Christmas is celebrated on December 25 (no it’s not the equinox). Finally you can answer that pesky Iglesia ni Cristo. Feels good, no?

hope to die

Three: Hope to die by Lawrence Block, Thriller-Crime, 364 pages

Pity, pity me. Lawrence Block is another writer to envy.

Block’s bestseler “Hope to Die” reads like a poem. Set wholly in New York, it tells the story of a retired detective who decides to look at an already closed murder case. Seemingly hopeless, only the lead character, Matthew Scudder, has the necessary skill to solve the murders before everything’s too late.

A real-page turner, this is one of the books you can never let pass by. More so when you’re a fan of crime and suspense novels, movies, and television shows like me.

As any crime story, details are graphic. Gore and sex are narrated, but the narrations are necessary to push the story. One pivotal scene near the end tells how the killer paid a Korean masseuse for spesho massa (special massage), and proceeds to kill her. Without the narration of this scene, Matthew Scudder couldn’t have caught the killer (nearly, but that’s a spoiler so sorry…)

If you want a great great read, or if you want to marvel at the greatness of the English language, or if you want pointers on how to write in first person, this book is for you.
